AWARD I
WILLIAM H. NICHOLS MEDAL AWARD – Founded in 1902

1 . To encourage original research by recognizing an outstanding contribution in the field of chemistry.

2. This annual award consists of two Medals, one gold and a bronze replica. The medals are presented at the William H. Nichols Meeting that consists of a Distinguished Symposium related to the medalist's field of expertise and the Medal Award Dinner. The event is held in March or April.

3. The award was established in 1902 by Dr. William H. Nichols, a President of the ACS. First presented in 1903, it is the first award authorized by the American Chemical Society. The Nichols Foundation, Inc. supports the purchase of the medals and the attendance of students and faculty from New York Section colleges. Travel and hotel costs are paid by the Section. Letters requesting nominations are sent in April. Nominations forms and data must be received by May 30 th . A call for nominations is published in the April Indicator , in C&E News and on the NY Section website www.newyorkacs.org . Nominations are active for five consecutive years.

4. Investigators who have published a significant and original contribution in any field of chemistry during the five calendar years preceding the presentation meeting are eligible for consideration by the Nichols Medal Jury.

AWARD II
NICHOLS FOUNDATION CHEMISTRY TEACHER AWARD

1. To recognize highly effective teaching and inspirational leadership to students in chemistry.

2. Presented annually to an outstanding high school chemistry teacher in the ACS, New York Section. The award consists of a plaque and $1000. The award is presented at the New York Section's General Meeting and Section-wide Conference held in January. Letters are sent in March to all area high schools requesting nominations. A selection is made by the Nichols Teacher Award Jury by September.

3. Established in 1958 by Charles W. Nichols, Sr. The $1000 monetary award is funded by the Nichols Foundation, Inc. The New York Section contributes the engraved plaque and a luncheon for the awardee and the awardee's family guests.

4. The rules of eligibility are as follows: The nominee must:

  • posses a bachelor's degree with a major in chemistry
  • have at least five years of teaching experience
  • be currently employed as a chemistry teacher at the senior high school level
  • must live or teach within the New York Section of the American Chemical Society
The award recipient will be selected on the basis of accomplishments that demonstrate:
  • a. high quality teaching
  • b. an ability to challenge and inspire students
  • c. extracurricular work in chemistry (including science fairs, science clubs, and other activities that stimulate the interest of young people in chemistry and related science)
  • d. a willingness to keep up-to-date in the field of chemistry (as evidenced by publications, enrollment in courses and summer institutes, attendance at scientific meetings)

NEW YORK SECTION OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD

1. To recognize the efforts of members of the New York Section who provide their time, leadership skills and dedicated service in promoting quality programs that contribute to the excellence of the Section.

2. This annual award consists of an engraved ACS plaque that is presented at the New York Section's General Meeting and Section-wide Conference in January. The awardee becomes a member of the Outstanding Service Award Committee for four years. A call for nominations appears in the April and May Indicators .

3. This award was established in 1976 and is supported by the New York Section. 4. Eligible are members of the New York Section whose nomination data has been sent to the Outstanding Service Award Committee by June 30 th .

Nominations with supporting data should be sent to the Office Administrator.

DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST OF WESTCHESTER AWARD

1. To recognize a scientist who resides or works in Westchester County and who has distinguished himself/herself in chemical industry or academia.

2. This annual award consists of an engraved ACS plaque and is presented at a special meeting of the Westchester Chemical Society. A call for nominations appears in the November and December Indicators . The award is presented is the Spring. Nominations remain active for three consecutive years.

3. This award was established in 1991 and is supported by the Westchester Chemical Society, a subsection of the ACS, New York Section.

4. Eligible are scientists of stature that reside or work in Westchester County , New York .
