Prof. Nicholas J Turro William H. Nichols Medal

The 2007 William H. Nichols Medal was presented to Professor Nicholas J. Turro of Columbia University by the ACS New York Section, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, White Plains, NY on Friday March 16, 2007. This was the 101st Nichols Medal to be presented for distinguished research in chemistry. The gold medal was accompanied by a bronze replica and $5000.

Professor Turro received the Nichols Medal for Pioneering Research on the Photochemistry of Organic Molecules and Supramolecular Systems. Professor Turro has made a major impact in the education of recent generations of physical organic chemists and photochemists both nationally and internationally.

Among the distinguished attendees at the dinner were Mr. David Nichols and Mr. C. Walter Nichols III (great grandsons of William H. Nichols), Mrs. Helga Nichols, Dr. Catherine (Katie) Hunt, 2007 President of the American Chemical Society, Mrs. Joan A. Laredo-Liddell, 2007 Chair of the ACS New York Section, Chair-Elect and Symposium Organizer Professor Marc A. Walters and previous Nichols Medal winners Professor Gilbert Stork and Professor Koji Nakanishi. Many of Professor Turro's former students celebrated this honor with him. Professor Ged Parkin of Columbia University introduced his good friend Professor Turro at the Medal Award Dinner.

The dinner was preceded by an excellent afternoon symposium that featured as distinguished speakers: Professors Jacqueline K. Barton, California Institute of Technology, Harry B. Gray, California Institute of Technology, Ronald Breslow, Columbia University and the Nichols Medalist Nicholas J. Turro.
